Cal's Pharmacy "LAND"

Apr 2023 by Louis Parsons

True full lengths are something of a rarity these days, but Portland-based core store Cal's Pharmacy scratches the itch with LAND, a North Western epic that comes within touching distance of the illustrious hour mark. Emile Laurent's protracted opening line bubbles with anticipation and sets the tone for what follows, including a wistful Tyler Bledsoe section set to Elvis Presley's rendition of Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues. Bledsoe's Land part precisely and emotively defines his maturing from bespectacled grommet-amongst-men in 2006's The Pharmacy Video, to his stature today as an established envelope-pusher and recognised professional; melancholy meanders throughout his technical knitwork of lines and ledge magic, showcasing the standard for Cal's Pharmacy's future generations. Further on, Finn Pope responds with a divergent part that explodes with erratic intensity, taking to transitions to the tune of Metallica's Motorbreath and injecting a frenetic energy into the video's middle that burbles beneath each subsequent clip. Sebo Walker has proven himself a divisive figure in the past but sans-shoe-sponsor and strictly ripping, his two track part to close out hushes his objectors with an objectively refined trick selection and abundance of style.
