Back in the day, for all the talk of inclusivity or how skateboarders (as social pariahs and outcasts) weren't judgemental, skateboarding could be pretty toxic. From supposed jovial mockery in Big Brother Magazine's 'the gay issue' to the tragedy of Keith Ogden, skateboarding wasn't a place that gay/trans/non binary participants felt particularly comfortable being open about who they were. Heck, despite being the worst kept secret in the industry, it wasn't until 2016 that legendary Girl pro and 1999 SOTY Brian Anderson felt the time was right to come out publicly (such was the seismic impact of the news, Vice magazine dedicated an entire 26 minute documentary to the telling of his story).
Which is why, in 2023, it's so amazing to see how far we've come as a collective and There Skateboards existing as a thriving, legitimate enterprise.
Dropping their latest video release, the appropriately titled 'A Homo Company,' There showcases much of the best of the LGBTQIA+ skate scene and proves that these days, unlike the 90's, skateboarding is very much an inclusive and non-judgemental pastime.
What a time to be alive!
