Gavin Bottger's 'Jazz June'

Aug 2024 by Route One

There's a technique in skateboard video making that, certainly in this day and age, is a little risky but one that, if you've the bottle to try to pull it off, can result in a part that'll be remembered through the ages. PJ Ladd's Wonderful Horrible Life managed it with aplomb, so did MJ in Pretty Sweet.

We're talking about building the footage with a slow burn, reaching the accompanying song's climax with an all out assault of your very best footage, and that's exactly what Gavin Bottger's 'Jazz June' part for Thrasher attempts to do.

Why is it risky? Modern wisdom dictates audience attention spans are shorter than ever. If the first trick and then every couple of tricks there after aren't absolute hammers, it's expected that you or I, the viewer, is likely to lose interest. But if you can maintain interest, whilst the song and the level of the tricks symbiotically peak? Well then you've got a classic!

We'll leave you to sit through Gavin's latest release to see what you think about that!
