Jenkem: Plotting the Lifestyle of a Trendy Trick

Sep 2023 by Route One

Hands up, who loves a pressure flip? I bet you didn't know that, had you performed one at any point between mid 1992 and maybe 2012, you'd have been persona non grata and cast out as a veritable leper by your skateboarding peers. OK, that's probably an exaggeration but skateboarding trends do go in cycles and Jenkem Mag have looked into the way trick fashions first grab the collective consciousness, how quickly they fall foul of favour and the inevitable way things eventually come back around.

The much maligned/beloved pressure flip, first brought to mainstream prominence in late 1991 by epoch defining EMB locals, is central to this thesis - owing to its historic derision and current ubiquity - but the rules discussed within ring true for a whole host of moves.

So what does this teach us? Well, as Churchill famously said, "those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Does that explain the proliferation of late flips from YouTube skaters? Are street plants due a return in the weeks and months ahead? Who knows! Still, it's a good article so give it a read!
