From PJ’s protegee to prodigy-fulfilled, Alexis Sablone has thrived in the limelight despite her outwardly reserved disposition. Letting her tricks (in particular, a succinctly flicked switch flip) do the talking, Sablone has since swapped the Coliseum for architectural pursuits in academia, all whilst ascending to street skating cult hero status with a storied career spanning over twenty years. With reverence to the structural elements that allow cityscapes and skateboarding to intersect, Sablone has a keen eye for design, an eye that made her a suitable choice as Olympic stylist to both Nike SB and its sister company, Converse CONS.
Commissioned to craft individual kits for Team USA and Team Japan, she pulled from her own perceptions of each scene’s stories and nuances to inform her design; American eagles representing skating’s birthplace and Japan’s blooming blossom trees a symbol of their sudden ascendency to competitive superiority. Alongside her country-specific creations, Alexis created a more all-encompassing, skater-centric kit imbued with chameleon imagery to embody her all-inclusive, architecturally adaptable impression of the contemporary skater.
Having fashioned the athlete’s outfits, she also presented a footwear pairing comprised of her own pro model shoe, the Converse CONS AS-1, and the ever-familiar Nike SB Dunk Low Pro. Both retain chameleon characteristics with wear-away uppers that transform their countenance over time, but the Dunk goes one step further with leather “lizard skin” embossing across its upper and through its suede Swooshes, breaking down to reveal juicy streaks of fuchsia suede. Similar to Sablone’s own on-board personality, the shoe contrasts its stylised accents with calm and collected, classic white panels for an out-there aesthetic with bundles of wearable style.
Signing off her design, tactile “A” and “S” initial detailing is imprinted at the heel, flanked by embroidery and hinting at further intricate details hidden within; custom artwork adorns the interior tongue tag and unique Alexis Sablone insoles complete the footbed. Arriving with a trio of lace options, the Nike SB Dunk Low Pro Alexis truly realises the chameleon vision: adapting to your habitat; adapting to your habits.
