Jimmy and Shea's 'Under, Over'

Oct 2024 by Route One

When Sony's legendary VX1000 Mini DV Camcorder hit the market back in 1995, it soon became apparent that it was virtually perfect for filming skateboarding. Relatively compact, amazing in low light, perfectly balanced weighting and with a handle that made you feel like you were wielding a alien slaying raygun, it soon became the only weapon of choice for skateboard film makers (and that was before the 1997 release of the Century Optic Mk1 fisheye AKA The Death Lens!).

Which is why now, nearly 30 years of technological innovation later, world leading skateboard brands are still using the last few remaining cameras. Take Real Skateboards for example; Jim Thiebaud's brand, being home to more SOTY's than any other company in existence, can afford a 4k rig or two but when it comes to getting in-air shots the likes of which you've never seen before, their vert lads regularly dust off the trusty VX to get the creative juices flowing.

Which is exactly what Jimmy Wilkins and Shea Donovan did last summer. Fast forward a year (and a very expensive camera upgrade later) and the boys 'VX shenanigans have inspired one of the most action heavy sequences we've ever seen. 'Under, Over' really is groundbreaking stuff and it wouldn't have been possible were it not for the OG classic. Click play to see their homage to the legendary 3CCD beast!
