There is no denying it, women’s skateboarding has (in terms of acceptance and participating numbers) come on leaps and bounds over the past decade. More and more girls are trying skateboarding and are ripping just as hard as their male counterparts. Sponsorship deals, video parts and respect – all of these are thankfully standard when it comes to talented women in the industry. This hasn’t always been the case though.
In the early to mid-nineties the thought of a female skater gaining sponsorship from a legitimate company seemed almost alien. Then Jamie Thomas and Ed Templeton (for want of a better term) “discovered” Florida’s Elissa Steamer destroying her local park, SPoT, and ripping harder than the majority of the male pro’s around at the time.
Nearly two decades later Elissa is an absolute legend of the game and the guys over at SPoT have just released this in depth interview with her. Take five minutes out of your day to hear from one of the most inspirational people to ever step foot on a board and then thank the world that people like Elissa exist.
